Queensland Towns
Qld Towns
In the south-east corner of Queensland is Brisbane, the capital of the state.
Brisbane is one of two international gateways into the state, and is the third largest city in Australia.
Also in the south-east corner is the Gold Coast with its beautiful beaches, theme parks and great party
atmosphere - and further north is the Sunshine Coast with kilometer after kilometer of family oriented beaches.
The other international gateway into Queensland is Cairns, the tourist capital of the tropical north
as well as a centre for backpacker jobs.
Cairns is a laid-back city whose population is constantly swollen by the flood of visitors who flock from the
south of Australia as well as all corners of the globe.
Accomodation
Camping is popular with budget travel and backpacking visitors to Australia, with many thousands of designated
camping grounds and areas.
If you want to camp on private property you need to get permission from the owners, but all roadside space in
Queensland is publicly owned.
There are hundreds of caravan parks around Queensland, ranging from small to quite large and they offering a
safe environment to camp and have at least the basic facilities.
Bed and breakfast offers great accommodation, wonderful breakfasts and terrific value for the backpacking
visitor to Australia.
This good value comes down to the quality of the hosts, who usually offer something beyond normal customer
service and are helpful in all areas of travel information.
Working Here
To work here you need to apply for an Australian Working Holiday Visa in your home country - it won't
be granted after you have arrived here.
All budget travel visitors other than citizens of Australia and New Zealand require a valid visa.
The normal term of a visa is 3 months, but it is possible to apply for an extension. If your total
stay will be no longer than six months then you can apply for the second visa online.
Backpacking travellers might be interested in getting a multiple entry visa, and this can also be discussed
with your local Australian Embassy.
You are allowed to do any kind of temporary or casual work, and it is not hard to get backpacker jobs.
But you must only work with any one employer for a maximum of 3 months and you should not work for the
full period of your stay.
